Nikon 1 J5  Features and Design

The new J5 has a clean and minimalist front plate that is dominated by Nikon 1 lens installations. Instead of being a minimized version of the good old F mount, this is an entirely new design that provides 100% electronic communication between the attached lens and the camera body, belonging to a dozen contacts. Just like on F-mount SLR cameras, there is a white point for natural lens alignment, although it has moved from 2 hours (when seen from the front) to the top of the mount. The lens itself features a short silver ridge on the lens barrel, which should align with that point so that you can attach the lens to the camera. While this may take a little familiarizing yourself, it makes changing lenses faster and easier.

The Nikon 1 J5 has a small mode button installed on top that now has most of the shooting modes that are usually found on the same button – especially P, A, S, and M – something strangely missing from J4. In addition to PASM, the J5 mode player has six other settings, motion Snapshot, best moment capture, green Auto photo for beginners, creative mode, Video, and a new sports mode.

Nikon 1 J5 Performance

The lowest noise and best detail, we recommend using ISO160 to ISO800, as the image has a low noise level and a reasonable level of detail. For low-light situations, ISO1600 to ISO3200 still delivers excellent results, even if noise increases and features are reduced. At ISO6400 and ISO12800, the noise level becomes steady, with some loss of color, and we would recommend avoiding these settings if possible, although the results may still be useful if resized and used on the web. There are also additional noise reduction options in ISO6400 and ISO12800 that provide images with less noise, although the details are quite soft.
