Nikon D40 Firmware Update | Setup User & Manual – The Nikon D40 surprised everyone when it was announced at the end of 2006. As a continuation of the favorite D50 model, Nikon D40 is a DSLR that is cheaper but not less capable. Nikon largely presses costs by holding a desire to increase the number of megapixels and continue to use the 6-megapixel sensor.

Nikon D40 Overview

The Nikon stops looking back and building the D40 for the future. The camera was previously shackled with the idea of maintaining backward compatibility with dozens of previous lenses. D50 and D80 both include screw-type couplings to connect the body-mounted autofocus motors to the lenses made for the first integrated autofocus system in the Nikon body, introduced in N2020 (F501) on April 1986.

The Nikon D40 borrowed elements from the D50 that preceded it as well as from newer D80 but offered a somewhat simplified user interface compared to both. It’s also very small for Nikon DSLRs, matching the little proportions of the Canon Rebel XTi and the Pentax K-100D, both of which are famous for their small size.

The front of the camera shows a wide range of standard controls, trimmed slightly from D80. The lens release is on the left side of the lens flange, and the bright incandescent AF auxiliary lamp is located between the top of the grip and the lens flange on the other side of the body.
