Nikon D800E Firmware Update – The Nikon D800E is a variant of the D800 which is free of anti-aliasing filter effects. The D800E matches the D800 in almost every way but does offer a significant increase in resolution in certain situations.
Nikon D800E Features
The Nikon D800E is very similar to D700. It still features a prominent handgrip, which looks more comfortable than the previous model’s grip. The overall shape of the D800E camera body is rounder and slimmer, but its dimensions are very close. With a weight of 900 grams, the D800E is approximately 10% lighter but still feels quite large in your hands.
The Nikon D800E has a separate Shooting Menu Bank and Custom Settings Bank, and even if you use both, you still can’t save all of your settings, let alone activate them simultaneously. This is a bit strange because even the more enthusiastic Nikon D7000 has two user settings that are easily accessed, labeled U1 and U2. Although we realize that many photographers do not use their memory/bank settings at all on their cameras, we are still happy to see them corrected in future firmware updates.
The Nikon D800E produces 7360 x 4912 pixel images, which produce sharp 24 inch x16 inch prints at 300ppi without interpolation. The level of detail captured is extraordinary and can be compared with many cameras and mid-format digital formats. It’s also very little more detailed and a bit sharper than the usual D800. However, there is more to the Nikon D800E image quality than pure resolution. The photos, especially those taken in NEF format, also have a good dynamic range and generally low noise levels.
Nikon D800E Picture Controls
The Nikon D800E offers all four Image Controls on the D700, namely Standard, Neutral, Monochrome, and Delete, and adds Portrait and Landscape to the list of available options. All Image Controls can be adjusted to your liking, then saved and transferred to another camera. What’s new on the Nikon D800E is a special quick access button that takes you directly to the image control menu – if you frequently use this profile, you will appreciate this increase above the D700.
